For their final preseason matches Cwmamman United’s First and Second teams travelled together up to play Penrhyncoch AFC, near Aberystwyth. On a lovely day, over sixty players, supporters and committee made the journey up to the Roosters ground, who also play in the newly formed FAW JD Cymru league. The day was very much about a celebration of football and a newly formed friendship between two clubs that play at the same league level, but of course in different regions, Cwmamman, JD Cymru South and Penrhyncoch, JD Cymru North. A good preseason crowd at the Roosters saw two great games, with the Blues’ Seconds Team overcoming the home team 3-0 and then Cwmamman United First team drawing with Penrhyncoch 3-3.

The Blues’ Seconds team kicked off the day and with a very young team came away with a great 3-0 win over well matched opponents, Connor Walters scoring two fine goals and experienced Blues player Nathan Macneil getting the third. This was a very promising performance for the coming season.
Cwmamman United First team then took on the Penrhyncoch JD Cymru North side and the crowd saw an exciting end to end match which eventually resulted in a fair result for both teams a 3-3 draw. The game was a great advertisement for the season to come for both teams, the Blues will be competing in the newly formed Welsh FAW Championship structure. It was a young Cwmamman, United side creating the initial early pressure having successive corners, but on the 13th minute Penrhyncoch took the lead with a fine lob finish from experienced frontman Steff Davies, 1-0 to the home side. Penrhyncoch Roosters then had another clearcut chance from five metres out that slipped outside the post of new Cwm Keeper James Kirkwood. Then it was the strong defensive play of captain Gareth Howarth, Nathan Davies and Calem Rees that stemmed the threats and just before half time, Blues winger Ryan Hurlow equalized through a smart finish after a blistering run from Luke Williams.

The second period began with some strong initial Penrhyncoch pressure but soon Cwmamman players Sean Howells, Joe Lewis, Jack Speed and Rob Morgans began to show with Blues frontman Luke Williams repeatedly driving forward. The deadlock was broken on the 63rd minute when the experienced Williams was brought down for a clear penalty and he got up to calmly place the ball into the top left of the goal, 2-1 to Cwmamman. On the 71st minute Roosters frontman Steff scored again with a clean finish 2-2. In the final minutes of this entertaining match both sides scored again, with the Roosters scoring from a neat flicked headed goal and then the impressive Ryan Hurlow equalizing for Cwmamman with a fine strike from outside the box, a 3-3 draw.
It was good to see such a positive final match of preseason for Cwmamman United and a great game of football between sides in opposite leagues just under the Welsh Premier league. The serious stuff starts now and Ryan Stephens’ team will now look forward to the next game against Undy (AWAY) in the Nathaniel MG Cup Saturday 3rd August.
