RUGBY DIVISION ONE WEST CENTRAL ROUND-UP

Bonymaen started the season well with a comprehensive victory over newly promoted Nantyfyllon. The home side look likely to be the team to beat this campaign and run in 34-11 winners. It was always going to be a tough ask for ‘Fyllon in their first game at this level but they entertain Tondu September 14th which will be a better indicator to their expectations this season.

Brynamman scored frequently in their 45-28 win over Skewen. The two clubs have shared some classic matches in recent times and this lived up to the bill. Both clubs enjoyed safe mid-table seasons last time out and at this very early stage it looks as though the Amman Valley side may be more likely to push-on but it is very early days! Skewen welcome Bonymaen next up whilst Brynamman travel to rivals Ammanford.

Ammanford lost narrowly away to newcomers Bridgend Athletic 21-20 in the opening game of the season in a game which doesn’t really give too much away about either sides prospects. Ammanford were another club settled in the mid-table last season but it is difficult to gage the quality of the unknown Bridgend Athletic yet.

Dunvant’s return to the West Central league ended with a narrow defeat to Glynneath. The game ended 28-27 to the Neath valley side who showed a lot of promise last season in spells. Both sides will feel that they can push for a promotion challenge and a narrow win will give the home side huge confidence as they lost too many close games last season.

Waunarlwydd came close but lost at home to Kenfig 28-24 in their first game of the season. Waun’ ended the season phenomenally well last spring but couldn’t transfer that into a win in the early stages of this campaign. It is a great start for Kenfig though who may be thinking they can push on and challenge this season… but it is all so early days.

Birchgrove started life in Division One with an impressive win away to a battling Tondu. The momentum from last seasons finish seems to have continued and getting an early away win under the belt opens the door for another successful season.
