Which sides will deal with the poor handling conditions over the weekend better?
Bryncoch v Vardre
Bryncoch have had a difficult start to their 3A campaign, facing the impressive Swansea Uplands in the opening fixture and then entertaining the solid Tonmawr. It doesn’t get any easier either as they welcome a good Vardre team this weekend. This will be both sides local derby this campaign and Vardre will start as favourites after they turned over Swansea Uplands 21-17 a fortnight ago. Promotion must me the aim for the Clydach side who narrowly missed out last term and they will need to win away games like this if they are to achieve that goal.
Away Win: Hard to see past Vardre in this one.
Cwmgors v Tonmawr
There was little between these sides last season as both clubs avoided the drop but never really got going. Cwmgors have started with two fairly heavy losses but have faced two sides with promotion intentions and have reason to stay upbeat. Tonmawr have won their only fixture to date, a 21-13 away win at Bryncoch and will be hoping to push on from there. Cwmgors is never an easy place to go and win away, weather looks like it is going to play a part and expect a scrappy, physical encounter.
Home Win: That home advantage in the rain to edge it
Cwmllynfell v Aberavon Green Stars
Cwm’ have only played the one game in the league thus far, beating Cwmavon 20-16 at home. After clinching an impressive promotion last season, they will be keen to get off to a good solid start and get early points on the board. They face a really tough game here though against an Aberavon Green Stars who have two bonus point victories from their opening two games (Cwmgors and Nantymoel). There is excitement within the ranks in Aberavon that this is the season they get their promotion, a really good side all over the park, with pace able to exploit tired defences. Cwm’ will need to be on their game for the whole 80 minutes if they are to get anything from this one.
Away Win: Green Stars to pull away in final 20 minutes.
Nantymoel v Abercrave
Nantymoel have struggled in this very early part of division 3a after their relegation from Division 2 last year. An opening day home loss to newly promoted Baglan was far from the best of starts and then Aberavon Green Stars put thirty points past them a fortnight ago. An instant turnaround is needed if they are to achieve any kind of promotion hunt back to Division 2. Abercrave have won their only game this season, a solid 32-15 home win against Cwmgors and the Upper Swansea Valley side will be keen to make it two from two here.
Home Win: A really tough one to call.
Swansea Uplands v Cwmavon
Swansea Uplands will be in the top for at the end of the season and will still feel disappointed with their narrow loss to Vardre a fortnight ago. It is those games which should decide whether they finish in the top two or just miss out like last season but no game can be taken for granted, especially in difficult weather conditions as expected. Cwmavon were well beaten at home to Taibach in their last league game but competed well in their opening fixture away to Cwmllynfell, coming away with a losing bonus point. This is one of the tougher places to travel this season and you fear that Cwmavon haven’t been able to get their confidence back after relegation last season.
Home win: A bonus point victory for the home side.
Taibach v Baglan
Game of the weekend for me. How good are Taibach? Their 63-11 away victory at Cwmavon sent shockwaves through the league and no doubt that other sides will be keeping an eye on this score line here. Baglan won their opening fixture away to Nantymoel which leaves them brimming with confidence and a win here would suggest back-to-back promotions could be a realistic possibility. Two good sides, we may find out that one of them are very good at the end of the game.
Home win: I think…..
